New roads in Oxfordshire – time for a rethink

Sustainable transport campaign group Oxfordshire Roads Action Alliance featured in the Oxford Mail and Oxford Clarion in September. The group is concerned by the continued emphasis on the county’s biggest ever road building programme. In a press release issued last month, the community alliance urged the County Council to conduct its own transport infrastructure spending review.

Oxford Mail ran a feature in September which was in the top ten most read articles on Newsquest’s website. The Oxford Mail has 1.2m monthly readers online.

Oxfordshire’s independent news publisher Oxford Clarion wrote a long read feature on its website: Must new houses mean new roads?

Speaking to the Clarion, ORAA said that the Didcot Relief Road HIF1 scheme and the Watlington Relief Road would join up to form a major new expressway between the A34 and M40 junction 6. “We believe that the County should pause any further new road building and review how transport and planning policies interact so that new housing does not swamp South Oxfordshire with traffic or destroy the countryside.
